CT Scan

What is a CT scan?

Computed tomography (CT) scan is a non invasive diagnostic tool for detecting diseases and injuries. It uses a series of X-rays and a computer to produce a 3D image of soft tissues and bones. CT is a painless procedure. We have a multidetector CT scanner - Toshiba Asteion Super 4.

CT V/s MRI scan:

Both MRIs and CT scans are cross sectional imaging tools and are used to view internal body structures. However, a CT scan is faster and can provide pictures of tissues, organs, and skeletal structure. CT scan provides good details of bones. S CT is more useful in trauma and stroke settings. MRI scan gives better soft tissue details. MRI scan has no radiation. MRI is better in assessing the joints, spine and abdomen organs.

Preparation for a CT Scan:

  • A CT Scan will be completed in few minutes. Scan may be repeated after some time with contrast if needed, to allow contrast to opacify the internal organs.
  • Bring your previous scans, ECG, X-Ray and blood reports and show the reports when asked for. It helps better evaluation and useful for comparison with previous scans.
  • Cotton dress preferable. - Clean dresses will be provided at the scan centre itself.Optional – You can bring your own cotton dress / dhotis / nighties.
  • Avoid jewelry and clothes containing metal (such as zips)
  • CT scan not recommended for pregnant females unless it is an unavoidable emergency.
  • 2 hours starvation is recommended for contrast studies You may be given a special dye called contrast (Iodine containing agent) during study for additional details. It will be given mixed with water and given orally or rectally, or given intravenously depending on study requirement. Contrast may cause adverse reaction in few patients. Please report to the staff members immediately. Following are signs of contrast reactions.
